چکیده

We present a lattice method to compute bubble nucleation rates at radiatively induced first order phase transitions, in high temperature, weakly coupled field theories, nonperturbatively. A generalization of Langer’s approach, it makes no recourse to saddle point expansions and includes completely the dynamical prefactor. We test the technique by applying it to the electroweak phase transition in the minimal standard model, at an unphysically small Higgs mass which gives a reasonably strong phase transition (λ/g2 = 0.036, which corresponds to mH/mW = 0.54 at tree level but does not correspond to a positive physical Higgs mass when radiative effects of the top quark are included), and compare the results to older perturbative and other estimates. While two loop perturbation theory slightly under-estimates the strength of the transition measured by the latent heat, it over-estimates the amount of supercooling by a factor of 2.

How to Calculate the Bubble Nucleation Rate in First Order Transitions Non-perturbatively

Electroweak baryogenesis in the Standard Model (or extensions of it) happens on or near the surface of the bubbles which nucleate and subsequently grow during the first order Electroweak phase transition. In this case, it is very difficult to compute the bubble nucleation rate analytically with sufficient accuracy: since the transition is radiatively generated, no classical bubble solution exis...

Electroweak Baryogenesis from a Classical Force.

We describe a new effect which produces baryons at a first order electroweak phase transition. It operates when there is a CP-violating field present on propagating bubble walls. The novel aspect is that it involves a purely classical force, which alters the motion of particles across the wall and through diffusion creates a chiral asymmetry in front of the wall. We develop a technique for comp...

Simulating the Electroweak Phase Transition: Sonification of Bubble Nucleation

As an applicaton of sonification, a simulation of the early universe was developed to portray a phase transition that occurred shortly after the Big Bang. The Standard Model of particle physics postulates that a hypothetical particle, the Higgs boson, is responsible for the breaking of the symmetry between the electromagnetic force and the weak force. This phase transition may have been respons...

Gravitational Waves from Electroweak Phase Transitions

Gravitational waves are generated during first-order phase transitions, either by turbolence or by bubble collisions. If the transition takes place at temperatures of the order of the electroweak scale, the frequency of these gravitational waves is today just within the band of the planned space interferometer LISA. We present a detailed analysis of the production of gravitational waves during ...

A consistent approach to bubble-nucleation theory

We summarize recent work on the consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates. Our approach is based on the notion of a real coarse-grained potential. The bubble-nucleation rate is calculated through an expansion around the semiclassical saddle point associated with tunnelling. We resolve outstanding problems related to the convexity of the potential, the double-counting of the effect of fl...
